Apple Caramel Cinnamon Rolls
Equipment
- 1 9" Springform Cake Pan Regular cake pan will do
Ingredients
FOR THE ROLLS:
- 2 Cups Milk (whole; 3.25%)
- 1-1/4 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Olive Oil
- 2-1/4 Tsp Active Dry Yeast (or one packet)
- 4-1/2 Cups Flour (divided)
- 2 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Baking Soda
- 1/2 Tsp Baking Powder
- 3/4 Cup Butter (melted)
- 4 Tbsp Ground Cinnamon
CARAMEL TOPPING:
- 1 Stick Salted Butter (1 stick = 1/2 cup)
- 1-1/2 Cups Brown Sugar packed
- 1 Tbsp Molasses
- 2 Tbsp Heavy Cream (35% whipping cream)
- 1 Apple peeled and finely diced
Instructions
TO MAKE THE DOUGH:
- Heat milk, oil, and 1/2 cup of sugar until slightly warm, but do not allow it to boil.
- Remove from heat and let cool (if necessary) to luke warm (about 110F if you have a candy thermometer). Add yeast and 4 cups of flour.
- Stir until well blended. Cover, and let sit for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour, fold in the remaining flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
TO MAKE CARAMEL TOPPING:
- Add the stick of butter, the brown sugar, molasses, and cream into a pot. Allow to melt over low heat until fully combined.
- Let boil for 20 seconds then remove from heat. Set aside.
TO MAKE THE ROLLS:
- Roll out half the dough into a large rectangle.
- Pour half the melted butter, half of the remaining sugar, and half the cinnamon onto the dough. Roll up into a log and slice to make the cinnamon buns.
- Repeat with remaining half of dough, and remainder of the butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Roll up into a log, and slice to make the cinnamon buns.
- Take your springform cake pans, remove the bottoms, wrap them in parchment paper, and place them back into the springforms. If you do not have springforms, grease 9" round cake pans.
- Pour half the caramel topping in each springform, sprinkle half the diced apple into each springform, then arrange the rolls in the pan. Allow to rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375F while waiting for that last rise.
- Cover the pans in foil and bake at 375F for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and invert the cake pans onto large plates, serving trays, or cake pedastals. Allow to cool, they will be extremely hot.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- You should consider purchasing a springform cake pan if you don't already have one (or 2!) they are a game changer when it comes to baking.
