Grow Bags – Product Review

Grow bags are flexible containers made of various materials such as fabric or plastic that are specifically designed for growing vegetables and other plants. They are touted to offer several benefits and functionalities for vegetable gardening such as:

  1. Aeration: Grow bags are permeable containers that allow air to reach the roots of plants. The breathable fabric bags facilitate oxygen exchange, preventing the roots from suffocating and promoting healthy root growth. This aeration enhances nutrient uptake and minimizes the risk of root rot.
  2. Drainage: Grow bags have excellent drainage properties. The breathable material allows excess water to drain freely, preventing waterlogging and improving soil conditions. Proper drainage is crucial to avoid root diseases caused by overly wet soil.
  3. Root pruning: The fabric walls of grow bags allow plants’ roots to be naturally air-pruned as they reach the container’s edge. When the roots encounter air, they stop growing and start developing new feeder roots, creating a denser and healthier root system. This air-pruning prevents root circling, which is common in traditional pots and could hinder plant growth.
  4. Temperature regulation: Grow bags help to regulate soil temperature, particularly in hot climates. The breathable material allows excess heat to escape, preventing overheating of the roots. This protection from extreme temperatures creates a more favorable growing environment for plants.
  5. Portability: Grow bags are lightweight and portable, making them ideal for gardeners with limited space or those who want the flexibility to move plants around. They can be easily transported, allowing plants to be relocated indoors during colder months or rearranged to optimize sunlight exposure.
  6. Versatility: Grow bags come in various sizes and shapes, accommodating different types of vegetables. Their flexibility allows for efficient use of space, making them suitable for balconies, patios, or small gardens. Grow bags can be stacked or hung vertically to maximize growing areas, enabling even more vegetables to be grown in a limited space.

Overall, grow bags are supposed to provide a cost-effective and practical solution for vegetable gardening. But do they live up to the claims? This is my review of theΒ Quusea Potato Grow BagsΒ that IΒ purchased off Amazon.

First Impressions

I had been dying to give grow bags a try for a while. I’ve heard many things about them (some good, some bad) and I wanted to see for myself. Upon opening the package I was immediately concerned that they would be far too small and that there was no way they could hold 10 gallons of soil. I propped them open and brought them outside to fill them up right away.

Once I had them filled, I was still feeling a little bit concerned about their size.Β  They stand about 13″ tall and 13″ wide. For some reason, I expected them to be bigger. I planted in them anyway. They didn’t come with instructions on how much to plant in each bag, so I had to do a little digging online. Apparently, 3 potato sprouts per bag are the maximum you should put in a bag, which is precisely what I did.

I buried them with three inches of soil on top as per guidelines found online. Once they sprouted, I’d bury them again by adding another three inches of soil. I continued to do that each time they sprouted until the soil reached the top of the bag. I can tell you, it didn’t take long.Β

My potato plants quickly overgrew the bags, and I found myself no longer able to mound them. Because I know how potatoes grow and with their being 3 spuds in each bag – I’m expecting each of these bags to produce very tiny potatoes come the early fall.Β

Overall, I’m satisfied with the grow bags, they may be a little smaller than I expected but they are robust, and they withstand the load of the soil. I have not tried to move then because they are darn heavy, so I’m not entirely sure the quality of the handles, but I imagine they are just as sturdy as the rest of the bag.

I would definitely recommend this product to friends and family. While I was a little disappointed with their size, overall, they have been a valuable asset to my garden this year.
